We are excited to welcome Dr. Xiaomin Chen, a renowned expert in hurricane research, as a speaker at the Rocket City Weather Festival. Dr. Chen’s research focuses on the complex dynamics that influence hurricane behavior, particularly rapid intensification, boundary layer processes, and numerical modeling and forecasting. His groundbreaking work includes the development of a boundary layer scheme for NOAA’s next-generation hurricane forecast model, which has significantly improved the model's ability to predict rapid intensification events.

Dr. Chen’s recent research delves into the wind hazards associated with landfalling hurricanes. By utilizing multi-platform observations and turbulence-resolving model simulations, he investigates the dynamics behind the formation of strong wind gusts over land, a critical factor in understanding the impacts of hurricanes after landfall.
At the festival, Dr. Chen will present "Hurricane Helene: Lessons Learned and Beyond." This talk will provide a comprehensive walkthrough of Hurricane Helene, with a particular focus on the tropical cyclone (TC) spinup and rapid intensification. He will discuss the forecast evolution, wind and rainfall hazards associated with the storm, and shares valuable lessons learned that can inform future hurricane forecasting efforts.
Join us for an insightful discussion on the cutting-edge research that is helping to improve our understanding and preparedness for hurricane events.
